We'll be knocking it out and sideways with the ever amazing Hope Trust from yon Denton way. And closing it out, Derek Larson and The Leavers. Once the night is through then you'll know if 2011 was a good year or a great year. We are just getting back on the horse it seems. Still way behind on posting to the site. Been staying stupid silly on Twitter and occasionally genius over on the Facebook page but keep forgetting to get it going on here on the band site. Probably because there isn't an 'app' for it on the phones we use. Still, excuses, excuses...

We will once more have the pleasure have of playing one of Fort Worth's best local music venues, The Moon Bar on West Berry near TCU. That all goes down Friday the 23rd of September. As always it should prove to be a fabulous time.

The State Fair of Texas is a deep fried masterpiece of crispy, golden goodnes and Fate Lions will be playing there on October 4th. Look for more details soon.

We have been very neglectful. So much going on and our site is lagging behind. We had a great string of shows and played with some amazing bands. The BAcksliders continue to thrill with their no holds barred rock and roll extravaganza. Bass Drum were a delight as well.

We will be visiting our Dallas friends tomorrow, Saturday 8/6, at The Double Wide. Hope to see you there.

You may or may not know that we have a vinyl 7" coming out late in the month. Look for a couple of in store performances and release events to be posted. Pinky swear.

Lots going on in the FL camp. Shows this week, Thursday with The Orbans at 8.0's in downtown Fort Worth as part of their KXT music series (we play at 7pm, $5 cheap) and Friday at City Tavern in Dallas with Jessie Frye and Soviet. Both appearances promise loads of great tunes and special charms.

We are also nominated for the Fort Worth Weekly Music Awards for best Rock act. You can cast your vote for us and tons of other great local talents HERE! A sketch artist named Tad Dobbs has a neat project happening on the interweb. He is drawing one sketch per day, for a total of 365 days, based solely on music that inspires him. And today he chose the song "Astronaut" by Fate Lions as his muse!
Here's what he had to say about Fate Lions...
"The Fate Lions are a great new Fort Worth band that I would classify as indie pop. Their songs are reminiscent of Fountains of Wayne, The Deathray Davies and Dressy Bessy with catchy hooks, infectious melodies and vocals that make you want to sing along. I haven’t seen them live yet, but I hope to soon. I predict that they will be a huge national act in the next 2 years."

I have been so neglectful of the site. I hope that you haven't wandered into inconsolable despair, perhaps thinking we'd fallen past the ends of the Earth. Alas, nothing as dramatic or fantastical, just plain old busy times. So to get right back into it let's just re-cap our last few shows. First off Friday the 23rd at The Moon in Fort Worth with Parachute Musical and The Winter Sounds. The Moon is always a pleasure of course. The amiable staff and owner always supportive and ready to have a good time. So to Kevin, Maunder, Taylor and all the rest a mighty thanks!

And too all the friends that made it out an even mightier thanks. That means you, Kathleen, Sarah, Emily, Delia, Holly, Jessica, John, Neff, Michael, Mark, Jake & Amie, all of you.

Next Day we rolled on up to Denton and into Hailey's to play with our good friends The Hope Trust. Also a very good time. Jacob Metcalfe and his swirling crowd of gassers kept us all enthralled with their wonderful sounds. We took the stage just after the Red 100's.

Then we loaded up the van and headed into Red River country and yonder Norman way for the Norman Music Festival. What a merry little band of travelers we were too. We'd taken a kind of tour diary but found it's contents to salty for even the most hardened ears. We'll just have to save it for the eulogies.

So we'll have more on the trip to OK later, for now we leave you with a reminder that we will be in Dallas this coming Friday at The Green Elephant with The Hi Tones from Austin. Alice & The Fate Bunch

Well, well, well. We have been busy on many levels. Some unintended. We are still reeling from having to miss playing some recent shows in Dallas. We hated to let anyone down, most especially ourselves. We like to get up on stage and feel important. We like to imagine that our personal realities are the fantasies and that the fantasies are real. We reach out with arms raised in salutation to the night gods and their sweet beautiful children. Not to mention the fact that I have a whole slew of sneakers that I’ll only wear while performing and hate to let them go to waste but can’t bring myself to compromise. We’ve also been preoccupied writing Ann B. Davis. I grew up watching ‘The Brady Bunch’ and good or bad must admit to their influence. The relationship dynamic that Alice and Sam maintained always impressed me. I suspected the both of illicit drug use for some time but upon further speculation imagine that they had a natural Zen thing going on. Many layers to the onion indeed. Anyway, we wrote her a letter and you should too:

In other news we’ve got big things (for us anyway) going on for this weekend. A small string of shows that culminate in a stop at the Norman Music Festival. This Friday we play at The Moon in Fort Worth, TX. It’s always been a great spot to listen to music and the clientele are very people. We’re playing with The Winter Sounds from Athens, GA (sweet Georgia breezes…) and Parachute Musical from Nashville, TN. All you 817 locals should get on out and make ‘em feel at home. We want them bringing back favorable reviews for the better treatment of Fort Worth touring acts that make their way to their respective urban strongholds. Saturday it’s a hop, skip and a jump over to Hailey’s in Denton. We’ll be out all night with locals, KXT favorites, The Hope Trust and The Red 100’s from Dallas. A well rounded evening of aural pleasures. You can at least stop by before heading over to the Electric Six show. Sunday we roll over to Norman, OK home of the Norman Music Festival. This thing just gets bigger and bigger. We play at 2pm in the beautiful Sooner Theater. We hope to make a whole lot of new friends.

Traffick Jam, SXSW, Norman Music Festival & Everywhere Between

We have a bunch of exciting shows lined up. Tomorrow Sunday March 14th we'll be playing at 3pm at The Grotto in Fort Worth for 'Traffick Jam' a benefit show to help end human sex trafficking. This started out as a solo set but is quickly shaping up to be a full band outing as all the pieces fall into place. Then Friday it's off to Austin and SXSW. We'll be playing the 'Fort Wizard Grab Bag' showcase at Dominican Joe Coffee Shop. We go on at 9pm right before Oso Closo but there will be great bands playing all day long, so com out early and stay late. Then we're playing all over the metroplex before ending up in Norman, OK for the Norman Music Festival at the end of April. Check the link HERE for the show nearest you.

They can vote as many times as they'd like. Online voting ends at 6p on Thursday. After that, the only way to vote is at Trees. Each vote placed at Trees counts as 100 votes. Had a great time last weekend. Niki and Veronica made the trip up from Austin for the show at Bandera’s in Dallas. A little awkward. I don’t know that the Bandera’s built in audience was really expecting what they got. After the show a man who appeared to be a bar stool fixture asked what I would call the music we played? I’m still at a loss as to how to describe it. Musical descriptions for the most part seem very closed. Not open to the possibilities. When we play songs live it’s like pulling them out from all the different directions that they’d like to go. It’s infinite. Sometimes to the songs detriment. So I said what I always say, pop rock. We’re all fans of The Beatles. The latter statement forgives many sins and is tossed out carte blanche by myself and many others. Although it’s a true statement I don’t really know how relevant it is.

Next day at The Grotto was like apples and oranges to the night before. There was a great crowd of people to see Great American Novel and Stoogeaphilia. Presumably they were there to see Fate Lions as well. It was Chris Young’s last night in Texas and a large number of our friends, mutual and otherwise made a special effort to come out and see him off. He’s guested on drums and percussion with the band over the last few years and we were all sorry to see him trucking off to Louisiana.
Well, as stated, there was a terrific crowd even though they’d put off start time for the first act while waiting for the Cowboys Wild-card game to finish. So the musical portion of the night did not get going in earnest until well after 10pm. Great American Novel played a cool set of off kilter love songs that had a dark, garage swamp groove. Maybe I was just imagining things since descriptions are so closed. Their bass player was very dynamic, serving as the perfect foil to the lead singer/guitarist’s low key, graveled bari-croon. Next up was Stoogeaphilia. They were sweaty and sticky and played some very rocking tributes to the classic Stooges oeuvre. My advice to bands invited to follow them is this: Don’t. They’re some of the best players in Fort Worth and they know they’re stuff. Better just to sit back and enjoy the show.
Fate Lions hit the stage right around 1am. We expected the house to clear out at this point but it didn’t. We played right up until close at 2am to a room full of energetic and enthusiastic listeners. I think I even saw people dancing. Great line ups, great staff and the best house crowd you could ask for. The Grotto is one of my favorite places to play in Fart Worth.
I should mention that that show was organized by the Fort Worth Music Co-op. Bands and Venues working together. It’s a community effort to bring the people what they want to hear while they spend their hard earned green. A swell idea in my book. Carry on.
Next up in February we’ve got a show lined up at Lola’s 6th with The Hope Trust from Denton and Phantom Caste on the 13th. Then it’s on to Dallas and the legendary Trees on the 25th. It’s a FREE Thurdsay night show produced by KDGE.

E' quasi Natale e sono attorniato da prati e montagne innevate, mentre fuori dalla finestra basse e cupissime nuvole scaricano una leggera ed insistente pioggerella filtrata dalle luminarie e dai jingle-bells della festa. Ma io penso al Texas. Nella sua accezione più classica. Sole. Caldo. Distese sconfinate di nulla. Oppure improvvise metropoli, che mai dimenticano la propria collocazione geografica all'interno di un territorio strano, ampio, di frontiera. Dove anche i suoni più evoluti e progressisti sempre devono fare i conti con una tradizione antica, forte, che segue il trascorrere degli anni come un'ombra e tuttavia non opprime, capace com'è di adattarsi al presente e, ne siamo sicuri, al futuro. Ed è vero, di gruppi che si cibano di tradizione ne escono ancora a frotte, ancora oggi, da tutti gli angoli degli States e soprattutto qui, nella culla della musica americana per come noi oggi la intendiamo. Ma ci sono sodalizi che nonostante tutto fuoriescono dalla massa con dischi assolutamente degni di nota. Uno di questi è Good Enough For You, album primogenito dei Fate Lions.
Ecco, adesso vi aspetterete che i Fate Lions siano un gruppo country. E invece no. Perchè i suoni delle radici fanno parte del bagaglio culturale della band, ma non ne dominano il suono. Sono radici nascoste eppure, irrimediabilmente, influenzano un album che poi in sostanza è indie rock. La produzione è opera di Salim Nourallah e ogni tanto, in effetti, sembra di sentire l'eco di alcuni suoi dischi, anche se bisogna dire che i Fate Lions sono fautori di un sound decisamente più dinamico. Inoltre, anche se non sempre è obbligatorio esagerare con i riferimenti materiali, mi sento di citare un album recente che, se qualcuno lo ricordasse, potrebbe essere di buon esempio: era il 2006 e in molti - io per primo - etichettavamo This Car Is Big, il primo disco dei Molenes, come uno dei migliori lavori di americana pura degli ultimi anni. Qualora non aveste idea di che cosa stia parlando, sappiate comunque che i riferimenti che facevano grande quel disco sono qui presenti in forze.
Per essere chiari, brani come Seen It All, Shining Places, la meravigliosa ed evocativa The Queen Himself, ma soprattutto come All You Do Is Crazy e Hard Swallow sono colpi clamorosamente riusciti di indie rock filtrato da contaminazioni rurali, dove le centrifughe liriche e musicali che fanno tanto Wilco e Son Volt sono accompagnate dal carattere forte dei mitici Say Zu Zu. Ma, lo dicevamo prima, la forza di questo disco consiste nella complessa storia che ognuna delle tracce presenti porta dietro di se. Una storia lunga oltre quarant'anni di musica a stelle e strisce. Un percorso capace di unire le concezioni soniche dei progenitori ed associarle con estrema naturalezza alla rivoluzione indie anni '80 e primi '90. Così un brano come Astronaut ricorda i REM degli esordi e The Girls Are Alright è imperniata su girotondi simil-jangle molto Teenage Fanclub, mentre la sublime Calendar Girls porta subito alla mente i migliori Lemonheads, senza scherzi. Good Enough for You? Si, direi proprio di si.

Almost December

Getting ready to roll into a new month, the last month of the year. It's easy to get caught up in all the excitement that this time of year can bring into your life. Good things are hard to come by and should be taken full advantage of. So I need to get off my ass and call my folks to see how they're doing. I encourage you all to do the same. Connect with the people that have been there for you. Things happen so fast. Time passes so quickly.

We're going to be working on a bunch of new material for the proposed EP. Working title for it will be 'House Ferrari'. The joke is a bit inside but it's been mentioned enough before that a lot of people get it. So yeah. I'll be headed over to Tony's sometime this week to get these songs down on tape. We'll then proceed to deconstruct and rebuild them from the ground up. Who knows how much, if any, of their original brilliance will make it through the process. Some of the song titles are 'Radio' (that one's inspired, I know), 'She Falls Fast', 'Honeychild', 'Fake News', 'All Over The City Girls' and 'Better Find Your Friends'. We may resurrect such FL classics as 'The Tommy Song' and 'The Lookers'.

I want to thank everyone that has supported the record so far. It's been a real learning experience, listening to people's reactions to it. Please keep those stories coming. I never get tired of reading about people thinking about us. Just email us at fatelions@gmail.com and we may even write you back.

So whatever your Holiday persuasion I hope that you have a good time with the people you love. If you don't, someone else will.

The Fate Lions "Good Enough For You"
The Fate Lions are a musical quartet lead by singer/songwriter Jason Manriquez. The band has a low key indie pop sound that recalls early REM and The Lemonheads, as well as that sleepy Beta Band vibe. Opening up with a fade-in on "Seen It All" is a good start with a catchy rhythm guitar riff that builds to a multi-tracked chorus. The rumbling "Astronaut" is a solid tune that reminds me of Cracker's "Teen Angst" quite a bit. The 80 and 90's styled shine is all over the album and there is no denying the bands melodic storytelling ability on "Calendar Girls." It would help a little if Jason's vocal was a bit more forceful, but another highlight is the bouncy "Starsign." The albums theme is a bit melancholy, but the beat never slows to a crawl. Even when a song loses it's way, like on "The Queen Himself" - the instrumental solos are so good, it keeps things compelling. The lush arrangements keep you hooked all the way through the album, as there isn't any filler here. The North Texas sound permeates the songs pretty strongly on the albums second half, especially on "Ride The Artifact". So is it "Good Enough For You?" -- if you're not too demanding here, it definitely is.

Fate Lions - Good Enough for You
Fate Lions are a Dallas-area band that makes low-key, but interesting and melodic pop. So it wouldn't be a shock if you found out that they were produced by Salim Nourallah, the master of low-key-but-interesting-and-melodic-pop himself. Fate Lions are a bit more upbeat and rocking than Nourallah, but they do share his sensibility and style, meaning that these songs may not jump out at you from your CD or mp3 player, but after a few listens they have a sneaky way of insinuating their way into your head. There's plenty to like here - the Teenage Fanclub jangle of "Seen it All" and "Calendar Girls", the catchy Americana of "Starsign", which recalls Additional Moog and Romantica, the Lemonheadesque "The Girls Are Alright", and the Midwestern rock of "Ride the Artifact". Check it out - it's more than good enough for you.

We have some upcoming shows and appearances, and we can't wait to see you at 'em!

On September 5th, around 10:30AM, we will be featured artists on The Good Show (88.7FM - KTCU). We'll be chatting with Tom and his gang of radio ruffians, spinning songs from the current record and playing live versions of songs that may or may not make the cut for the up-coming 'House Ferrari' EP. Feel free to shoot us a vote after you hear them. If you aren't able to tune in live, The Good Show nearly always has an mp3 of the entire show available for download or streaming within a few days of airing.

On September 25th we will be playing Lola's in Fort Worth. We're opening for Trey Johnson (singer/songwriter, formerly of Dallas band Sorta) and his merry band of miscreants.

On October 2nd we will be playing a very special show with our new friends The Felons and Transistor Tramps at The Grotto, a lovely venue also located in Fort Worth. A not to be missed event with everyone's favorite moon lighting 'Lion', Chris Young on drums.

And, finally, for those who want to bring the whole family for an experience that only Fate Lions can give, we will be playing a semi-acoustic set at the new Union Grounds Cafe on the TCU campus.

Fate Lions – auf den Spuren vom Teenage Fanclub

Die von mir sehr geschätzten Teenage Fanclub haben sich ja in den letzten Jahren etwas rar gemacht. Das letzte Album liegt vier Jahre zurück. Ob und wann mal was Neues kommt ist unbekannt. Nun habe ich aber ebenbürtigen Ersatz gefunden. Die texanische Band Fate Lions, die seit 2007 existiert, wandelt auf den Pfaden der Schottenrocker, und das klingt wirklich toll: melodischer Gitarrenpop, immer auch mit einer Brise Melancholie garniert. Gut genug, um hier in meinem Blog Erwähnung zu finden. ‚Good Enough For You‘, so heißt auch ihr seit Anfang Juni erhältliches Debütalbum, dass es zur Zeit sogar für lau gibt. Voraussetzung dafür ist lediglich die Angabe der eigenen Emailadresse.

Fate Lions "Ain't Half Bad" According to Bill

The Fate Lions, led by songwriter and front man Jason Manriquez, have roared onto the scene with their new CD entitled, "Good Enough For You". It has a pretty lo-fi indie sound, but remains charming and melodic. The best resemblance that comes to mind is The Lemonheads, but also some traces of Golden Bloom (recently reviewed here), Teenage Fanclub, and the early jangle pop days of R.E.M. "Good Enough For You" is "an album title jokingly plucked from Manriquez’ own experiences regarding family and, oddly enough, food". It will be up to the listener to decide how good it is, but after a couple listens I think these guys could have a real future with proper backing and better resources at their disposal.

Manriquez has some keen instincts for pop rock songwriting, and the band incorporates plenty of elements like oohs and ahhs, hand claps, and tambourine to keep things interesting and enjoyable. One thing they should have changed some more is the guitar tone, but at least it is played capably. Manriquez comes across a bit of a slacker in the vocal department, but somehow it seems to fit with the musical and lyrical vibe.

By far and away the best track is "Seen It All", but I'd also like to call your attention to the driving "Starsign", which incorporates clever 70s style backing vocals over a breezy acoustic rhythm, the amusing "All You Do Is Crazy", and the clap-a-long treat, "The Girls Are Alright". "Astronaut" would have also made my list, but the distortion on the vocals was a deal breaker for me.

All in all, Fate Lions ain't half bad - now the question is: Is it "Good Enough for You"?

So we have a few shows coming up. One in Dallas at the larger of the two Opening Bell venues, the Mosaic location on North Akard. That's this Saturday, May 2nd. I've not been there before but everything that I've heard is really positive. Lots of people telling me it's their favorite place to listen to live music. Needless to say, we're always excited to be playing and especially playing a place that so many are excited about. If you live in the Dallas area, that side of the whole Metroplex, we hope that you will find it in your schedule to squeeze us in. The next event, and I do mean event, is slated to happen next Wednesday, the 6th at 9 pm in Fort Worth at the Red Goose, downtown. We'll be performing between drag shows. It should be a lot of fun. I know that it's hard to get out mid-week but it's totally worth it. One of those once in a lifetime sort of things. You'll just hate yourself in the morning if you don't try and make it out.

"Fate Lions, Good Enough for You: Speaking of Nourallah, this Fort Worth four-piece band finished collaborating with him last year on its forthcoming record, which fairly shimmers with potent power-pop. The band’s singer/songwriter/guitarist Jason Manriquez says the band is wrapping up mastering right now and hopes the disc will be out sometime around South by Southwest. The Fate Lions get my vote for Most Improved Player(s). In about a year’s time, they’ve gone from so-so Americana act to one of the best pop-rock bands around. I’d have to tip my hat to ‘em anyway just for doing what they’re doing: conjuring up Nick Lowe-ish, R.E.M.-y, Elvis Costello-esque ‘80s radio pop. Not only is no one in town really doing anything similar but also the early ‘80s were my formative music years – ah, memories. But the Fate Lions aren’t just aping some sort of distinctive sound from yesteryear to milk sympathy from old nostalgic tools like me. They’re being the real deal, expertly mixing jangly, cranky, countrified, Rickenbacker-tinged solos with snappy, toe-tapping beats and ooh-ahh-ing harmonies. “Astronaut” hinges on a Byrds-y, Doors-ish, Middle-Eastern guitar figure over a thumping tribal beat – accented by tambourine (awesome) – and sung by frontman Jason Manriquez either on a bullet mic or in a tin can. “Starsign” is a sunshiny ditty that wouldn’t seem out of place on a Triple-A station, and “The Girls Are Alright” is a catchy neo-Brit-pop gem whose chorus includes always lovable double hand-claps – y’know, clap-clap clap, clap-clap clap, etc. – and wry lyrics like: “Because the girls are alright / They go bump in the night / From their heads to their toes, it’s what everyone knows / Yeah, the girls are alright / They go bump in the night with me." Well, I guess Don Juan Manriquez’s confidence is well earned.
